Dispatch-aware planning of energy storage systems in active distribution network

This paper proposes a procedure for the optimal siting and sizing of energy storage systems (ESSs) within active distribution networks (ADNs) hosting large amount stochastic distributed renewable resources. The optimization objective is to minimize ADN’s day-ahead computed dispatch error. allocation ESS determined while taking advantages from their operational features regarding dispatchability. proposed planning defined by formulating, solving, scenario-based non-linear non-convex power flow (OPF). OPF problem converted piecewise linearized (PWL-OPF). control strategy designed fully exploit capacity ESS. It integrated PWL-OPF achieve dispatchability all operating scenarios. Benders decomposition technique employed tackle computational complexity problem. decomposed into two sub-ones: master where ESSs decided, several subproblems ADN with support allocated evaluated through OPF. To validate method, extensive simulations are conducted on real Swiss grid embedding significant PV generation capacity.
